If you use the Character Map app, the Alt code is displayed in the lower right-hand corner of the window whenever you select a character. To search the menus, press Alt + / (Windows, Chrome OS) or Option + / (Mac). There are a few ways to figure out the Alt codes for your favorite special characters. Memorizing a couple of codes will be a lot faster than hunting down a symbol each time you use it. If you’re frequently using just a couple of special characters but don’t need access to every accent mark available, you can get away with learning the shortcuts for the handful of characters you need. Click the “Copy” button to copy the symbol to your clipboard and paste it wherever you’d like. The symbol will appear in the text box below.
There’s no good search function, but once you find the character you want to use, double-click on it. The Character Map is self-explanatory.You can, of course, pin this app to your start menu or your toolbar if you decide to use it frequently. To find the Character Map, open up the Start Menu and search for it in the search bar.(In Word, you will also click on More Symbols at the bottom of the drop-down menu.) The menu arrangement may be a little different. Then, go to the Main menu, click on the Insert tab, and then click Symbols. The Character Viewer appears where you clicked. Click in the text where you want to place the character, then choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols (or press Control-Command-Space bar). First, select the font from the font menu. You can use the Character Viewer to add special characters and symbols to text, such as math symbols, Latin characters, and pictographs. This is a copy and paste method that you don’t need an internet connection to complete. With Microsoft Word® and Powerpoint®, you can access the swashes using the Insert menu.
